World number one Vijender Singh ( 75kg) clinched an unprecedented second boxing gold for India at the ongoing Asian Games while two others settled for silver to round off the best ever campaign by the country's pugilists at the quadrennial mega-event, on Friday.

It was sweet revenge for Olympic and World Championship bronze-medallist Vijender when he blanked reigning world champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan 7-0 at the Foshan Gymnasium.

Atoev had beaten the 25-year-old Indian at the World Championship semifinals last year but this time Vijender plugged the loopholes which led to that loss and emerged a clear winner.

Indian men's kabaddi team continued their golden run by winning record sixth Asiad kabaddi gold after beating Iran 37-20 in the finals.

The indomitable Indian kabaddi team dished out a brilliant performance right from the start as they outwitted their opponents to take a convincing lead of 24-3 at the lemon-break.

However the Iranians bounced back strongly in the latter half and fetched some crucial points to reduce the margin.

In the semifinals on Thursday, Indian men registered a convincing win over Japan. India did not let Japan score much in the game with the final score read as 52-17.

The Indian women fashioned a comprehensive 28-14 victory over Thailand in the finals to win the 11th gold for India on the 14th day of the ongoing Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

The Indian women dominated the match from the very beginning, leading by 17-7 at half-time.

The second half had also the same result with the Indian women pinning the Thailand players on the ground.

In the semifinals, Indian women overcame Iran by a close margin of 23-22. The match got into an interesting mode when it was tied 22-22 in the closing time there by drifting it to extra-time.

Teen sensation Vikas Krishan ended Indian boxing's 12-year-old gold medal drought in the Asian Games by winning the lightweight (60kg) title.
India had not won a boxing gold at the Asiad since 1998 when the flamboyant Dingko Singh fetched the bantamweight top honours and it took a little known teenager from Haryana to break the jinx.

The 18-year-old Vikas stunned defending champion Qing Hu of China 5-4 in the lightweight 60kg final that was low on thrill as the Indian decided to play defensive.
World Youth champion and a bronze-medallist at the inaugural Youth Olympics, Vikas kept a shell guard which ultimately proved impregnable for his rival.
With scores tied 1-1 at the end of the first three minutes, Hu pushed Vikas out of sheer frustration in the second round and was handed a warning which cost him crucial two points.
The warning ultimately proved decisive as the two boxers could manage just one scoring punch each in the final round, which was just enough for Vikas to repeat Dingko's feat.

Ashwini Akkunji created yet another history in the track and field event as she won the eighth gold for India by clinching the women's 400m hurdles title at the 16th Asian Games, with a timing of 56.15 seconds, in Guangzhou, China. When Akkunji Chidananda Ashwini called up her family after the qualifying race for the 400m hurdles at Asian Games in Guangzhou in China on Wednesday, she repeatedly said, “I must get gold tomorrow.”

On Thursday afternoon, she held the tricolour high at the awards ceremony with her career best performance that brought gold for the country ending a 25-year drought of medals in the event. It was gritty P.T. Usha who last won a gold medal in the event in the 1986 Asian Games. Usha finished fourth in the 1984 Olympics.

Ashwini made headlines after she gave the decisive lead for the Indian 4 x 400 m relay team in the recent Commonwealth Games in New Delhi running the third leg of the race on October 12. The team went on to win gold.
Although she could not repeat her performance in the hurdles in Commonwealth Games, “she got back her rhythm during the four weeks of practice (for Asian Games),” said Rajinder Singh Saini, Chief Coach India Athletics (Juniors) over phone from Patiala.

The gold medal-winner hails from a farmer's family of a hamlet called Jansale near Siddapura, about 30 km from Kundapura in Udupi district. Her parents B.R. Chidananda Shetty and Yashoda spotted her talent and ensured that she joined the Tata Athletics Academy in Jamshedpur. Mr. Shetty first admitted her to the Government-run Sports School at Vidyanagar near Bangalore. There were occasions when the couple had to pledge their jewellery to support Ashwini's training.

Ashwini's sister A.C. Deepthi told The Hindu from Jansale that sheer determination had taken her sister to the top. “She practised hard,” she said. Ms. Deepthi and Mr. Shetty pointed out that Ashwini's timing was 59 seconds in the nationals at Thiruvananthapuram about a year ago. On Wednesday, she clocked 56.17 and on Thursday it was 56.16 seconds. “She is close to the qualifying mark for Olympics,” Mr. Saini told The Hindu. “She has to aim at bringing her timing to 55 seconds now.” She can hope for a podium finish at the Olympics if she clocks 53 seconds,

The Indian men's hockey team defeated four-time champions South Korea 1-0 to finish with a bronze at the Asian Games here Thursday.
Pakistan won the gold with a convincing 2-0 win over Malaysia in the final. They won the Asian Games title after 20 years, which also booked a berth for them in the 2012 London Olympics.
Malaysia, who were making their maiden appearance in an Asian Games final, had to settle for the silver. They have won the bronze medal six times.
After their disappointing loss to Malaysia in the semifinals, India had to contend with a third place finish.
India's only goal in the bronze medal match came through Tushar Khandekar in the 40th minute. The defence, which let the team down in the semifinals, played with resolve to hold onto the lead till the end at the Aoti hockey field here.
India, who last finished on the podium with a silver at the 2002 Busan Games, got their act together as they gave a tough challenge to the nimble-footed Koreans.
After a goalless first half, India stepped up the pace in the second half with a flurry of attacking moves.
Indian goalkeeper Bharat Chetri made some smart saves. South Korea, who won gold in 2002 and 2006, got two penalty corners in the first half and one in the second but Chetri stood solid.
India also got two penalty corners but failed to score.
India's Spanish coach Jose Brasa said the bronze medal was not a real measure of the team's talent.
'I think we were the best side in the competition, winning five of our six matches. I can't say I am happy, but at least the boys will not return home empty-handed,' said Brasa, whose contract was till the Asian Games.

Tintu Luka won the bronze medal in the women's 800 metres event of the track and field competitions at the Asian Games on Thursday.

Tintu, who had a disappointing finish in the New Delhi Commonwealth Games, led the pack right from the start, but couldn't keep pace in the last 50 metres and finished third with a timing of 2:01.36 seconds.

India won the Bronze Medal in the squash Mens team event after losing to Pakistan,in semifinal tie in the Asian Games.

Indian men lost to arch-rivals Pakistan 0-2, although, both Siddharth Suchde and Saurav Ghosal put up some resistance but they could not overcome the challenge posed by the Pakistanis to lose 1-3 each and settle for a bronze medal along with Hong Kong.

Suchde, after losing the first set, though came back strongly to bag the second but eventually went on to lose 14-16 12-10 9-11 5-11 in 83 minutes.

It was almost the similar story for Ghosal as well, who also managed to bag the second set just like his compatriot Suchde, but failed to come good in the other three sets to get beaten 13-15 11-5 5-11 6-11 in a clash that lasted 52 minutes.

After the loss of these two boys, the third and final tie between Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu and Danish Atlas Khan became inconsequential.

Indian women's squash team settled for a bronze medal in the Asian Games after slumping to a 0-2 defeat at the hands of favourites Malaysia in the semifinals.

The Indians were no match for the higher-ranked Malysians as as Anaka Alankamony was drubbed 0-3 Wee Wern Low in the first tie before world number one Nicol Ann David defeated Joshna by an identical margin.

The Indian quartet of Joshna, Anaka, Dipika Pallikal and Anwesha Reddy had to be contend with the bronze medal along with the Korean girls, who too suffered a 0-2 loss at the hands of Hong Kong in the other semifinal.

In the lop-sided semifinal today, both the Indians failed to put up any resistance before their fancied opponents as Anaka was humiliated 2-11 4-11 6-11 by Low in 22 minutes.

The script was no different for Joshna as Nicol, the gold medallist in the individual event, ended the Indian's challenge in just 18 minutes with a 11-4 11-2 11-3 victory which rendered the third and final tie between Anwesha and Delia Odette Arnold inconsequential.

Mary Kom, who turned 28 on Wednesday, conceded a slender 1-3 lead to Cancan in the opening two minutes and all through the bout, the Indian was left to chase the local favourite.

The Manipuri mother-of-two, who is a Khel Ratna awardee and has been dubbed 'Magnificent Mary' by the International Boxing Association, tried to fight back in the final two minutes but Cancan managed to hold her own to come out triumphant.

Tarundeep Rai created history after he became the first Indian archer to win a silver in the men's individual archery event.

In a closely fought contest, the Indian archer lost to the Woojin Kim of South Korea 28-28 27-28 29-28 27-28 27-29.

Rai gave a vital lead to his opponent in the last set as he shot an eight pointer in his first attempt. And even though the Indian made amends in the next two attempts by scoring nine points each but those did not prove enough to halt the Korean.

And at the end, Rai had to be content with a silver.

Somdev Devvarman today created history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in the men's singles tennis event of the Asian Games after outplaying top seed and world number 44 Denis Istomin 6-1 6-2 in the lop-sided summit clash here.

With this win, Somdev won his second gold from the tennis competition, and seventh for India, having already captured yellow metal in the men's doubles with Sanam Singh.

No Indian player had played in the gold-medal match in the men's singles before Somdev, world number 106, and the country had three bronze medals to show so far at the Games.

Leander Paes (Hiroshima in 1994), Mahesh Bhupathi (Bangkok in 1998) and Prahlad Srinath (Bangkok in 1998) had won those three bronze medal in men's singles.

In total, Somdev won three medals at this edition of the Games as he had earlier won a bronze in team event as well.

Heptathlete Pramila Ganapathy Gudandda, competing in her first Asian Games, at the age of 33, claimed the bronze in a modest field which contained eight athletes to begin with while only six finished.

Her 5415 was nothing much to talk of since she has four marks over 6000 and five others over 5700.

Yet, winning a maiden medal is always an achievement and Pramila was thrilled.

“I have been waiting for this moment for 12 years,” she said. The Karnataka woman dedicated the medal to her husband, and four-year-old daughter Unnathi.

She made it clear that she was not yet ready to pack up since her aim was to qualify for the London Olympics and compete on the biggest stage before thinking of retirement.

The Indian trio of Rahul Banerjee, Mangal Singh Champia and Jayanta Talukdar held their nerves to beat Chinese Taipei and clinch the men's team bronze in the Archery competition of the Asian Games on Monday.

Banerjee, Champia and Talukdar defeated the Chinese Taipei team of Cheng Wei Kuo, Chia Chun Sung and Kang Tien 220-216 in the bronze medal match.

This was India's second archery medal at the ongoing Games after the women's team too settled for the third place yesterday at the Aoti Archery Range.

The men on Monday started their campaign by beating Bangladesh 221-186. The next round was also a cakewalk as they beat Nepal 221-194 before losing to Korea 216-222 in the semifinal match.

In the bronze medal match, the Indians took the upper hand by scoring 57 against Taipei's 52 in the first set but the balance tilted in the third set.

The Indian trio scored 53 against Taipei's 58. But the three regained their composure in the final set and notched up 54 points against Taipei's 50 to clinch the bronze medal.

Preeja Sreedharan takes Gold in 10,000m for women.Top Indian long-distance runner Preeja Sreedharan clocked a personal best of 31:50:47 in the women’s 10,000m final to clinch the country’s fourth gold medal at the Asian Games

Sreedharan, who had finished fifth in both the 5,000m and the 10,000m in the last edition of the Games in 2006, raised her performance to give India a flying start in track and field competition.

The 28-year-old’s previous personal best for the 10,000m was 32:04:41 recorded at Watford in June, 2008.

India's women archers missed a golden chance to upset World No.1 South Korea in the semifinal and had to finally settle for the recurve team bronze medal by defeating Chinese Taipei at the Asian Games here Sunday.
The Indian team comprising Dola Banerjee, Deepika Kumari and Rimil Buriuly defeated Chinese Taipei 218-217 in a close contest at the Aoti Archery Range.

In the semifinal, India were trailing by two points after the first round that South Korea won 56-54. But after two good rounds, the Indian archers opened up a two point lead at 167-165. The Indians, however, failed to hold on to their nerves and shot a poor 54 against the 56 by the fancied South Koreans in the fourth round, after which both the teams were tied at 221.

In the shoot-off, the South Koreans showed their class by scoring 29 while the Indians managed 26.

Virdhawal Khade declared that he was a star swimmer in the making as he won the bronze medal in the 50m butterfly event at the Asian Games here on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old Khade clocked 24.31s to land India's first medal in swimming after a gap of 24 years in the Asian Games. Khazan Singh had won the last swimming medal for India, a silver in the 200m butterfly at the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul.

The trio of Yasin Merchant, Brijesh Damani and Sneh Aditya Mehta failed to live up to the expectations and went down fighting to Junhui Ding, Liang Wenbo and Tian Pengfei 16-70, 51-46, 27-68, 0-96 in the final of team event.

In the first game, veteran Yasin was blanked by Ding 16-70 but Aditya drew parity for India, beating Wenbo 51-46 in the next.

The Chinese went ahead once again as the Indian duo of Yasin and Aditya failed to lift their game at crucial junctures, losing the doubles encounter to Ding and Pengfei 27-68.

Wenbo then thrashed Yasin 96-0 in the fourth rubber to pocket the gold medal in the hosts favour.
